Situated in a UK city only moments from the seafront, is a university renowned for its excellent teaching, outstanding student experience and exceptional support. The University of Portsmouth is an award-winning university with a five-star rating by QS, ranked among the top 10 young universities in the UK (Times Higher Education) and listed as a top three modern university for research power (Research Excellence Framework 2021). It makes for a great choice for anyone seeking an impactful education.
Study Smarter
The University boasts many unique qualities — one of them is its Faculty of Business and Law, which provides students with an unrivalled education that prepares them to take on the challenges and vigour in several industries. Its Business and Management studies were ranked second among modern universities by research power by the Times Higher Education.
Programmes fuse theory and practice., Teaching is led by qualified academics who are always glad to share their industry knowledge and experience, and coursework is based on current real-world problems. Modules include chances to participate in consultancy or advice work with nearby businesses to tackle real challenges they are experiencing. Paid internships, the enterprise programme, mentoring and networking gatherings boost learning and growth further.
Facilities enable students and staff to be as hands-on as possible as well. These include the Bloomberg Suite, the Technology Enhanced Active Learning room, and the Business Simulation Suite — all of which bring theory to life. The Bloomberg Suite, for example, mirrors the system used by 250,000 professionals in financial services — allowing students to monitor and analyse real-time financial market data and place trades on the Bloomberg electronic trading platform.
Such active learning applies to all programmes here. For BA (Hons) Accounting with Finance, this includes the chance to work with industry-standard software and to undertake additional CV-enhancing certifications, such as the Bloomberg certificate and MSO Excel certificate.
While most people think accounting is about analysing spreadsheets and crunching data, this programme will equip you with more than that. It transforms students into accounting professionals who can comprehend, visualise, and communicate financial data to make informed decisions. What’s more, this degree is accredited, which means that students are exempted from ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW professional examinations.
For graduate Jaanvi Patel, pursuing a BA (Hons) Accounting with Finance prepared her for a successful career in the industry. “Studying BA (Hons) Accounting with Finance at Portsmouth gave me an understanding of both financial and management accounting. This helped me get to where I am today as it made me aware of what I enjoyed and where my strengths lie,” she says. “The course also gave me the opportunity to undertake a work-based module where I was able to gain insight into working in the real world. I was so proud of myself when I received an award for ‘Outstanding Professionalism,’ which really stood out to employers when applying for roles after I had graduated.”
The BA (Hons) Business and Management degree has the same effect. Developing students to be agile, responsible individuals who can lead and develop a modern global business, the programme takes an entrepreneurial approach to big business ideas. This happens through networking and interactions with small companies, as well as group work to develop and test ideas and theories learnt in the classroom. “I chose Business and Management because I wanted to gain a wider knowledge of business, with the hope I’d find something I enjoyed doing and could then specialise. I enjoyed the variety and flexibility, the ability to be able to tailor the course to meet my own interests,” shares graduate Thomas Ruther.
The opportunities don’t end there. Students can undertake a placement year as part of their course. Many students have completed placements at world-class companies like Disney, Goldman Sachs and Deloitte.
These opportunities are complemented by the exceptional support and guidance that the University has to offer. This ranges from academic skill coaching to mentoring programmes, library seminars, and well-being apps. The International Induction Week kicks things off, connecting you with other international and UK students as you tour around Portsmouth and take part in social events before you start your course.
“Something I have always applauded the University for is how much importance they give to support in general – especially mental health support and financial support. It does not matter if it is through leaflets or social media stories, they make sure you get the message that they are there to help you in case you need it,” shares international student Abderrahman Echchahed.
“The University organised many more events such as free sessions for the societies I was interested in and multicultural events to showcase all the heritage that international students were bringing to the city – which I particularly found fascinating,” says Echchahed.
