1. Server

National average salary: $40,777 per year

Primary duties: Servers are responsible for making sure their guests have an enjoyable dining experience. They typically have multiple tables or guests to take care of at the same time, which requires excellent time management, attention to detail, and multitasking abilities. Servers greet guests, take their food and drink orders, deliver orders to each table, and check in with guests throughout their stay to see if there’s anything else they need.

They answer guest questions, provide recommendations, relay information to the kitchen and bar, keep track of what each guest orders and create itemized bills. Servers may also process customer payments.

2. Event planner

National average salary: $41,179 per year

Primary duties: Event planners oversee every phase of the events they work on, from the initial planning and design to the final execution. Depending on the industry they work in, they may plan weddings, concerts, fundraisers, parties, ceremonies or corporate gatherings. Event planners establish and maintain budgets, secure locations and arrange transportation. They also meet with clients to discuss their goals, design the layout for each event, and create the program schedule.

Event planners often collaborate with caterers, decorators, entertainers, and other vendors. Before each event, they inspect the space to ensure it meets their client’s requirements and after the event, they supervise the clean-up. Event planners also send invoices, approve payment plans, and track bills.

3. Administrative assistant

National average salary: $45,597 per year

Primary duties: Administrative assistants provide support to other professionals by completing a wide variety of clerical tasks. Often, they support multiple professionals who work for the same organization. Administrative assistants manage calendars, schedule meetings, answer phone calls and facilitate incoming correspondence via email, fax, memo and mail. They’re also in charge of organizing important files and creating documents for conferences, presentations and meetings.

Additionally, these professionals may help proofread existing documents and reports, keep track of office inventory, schedule deliveries, communicate with vendors and order supplies as well. Being highly organized and having exceptional multitasking skills are important for this role.

4. School teacher

National average salary: $48,575 per year

Primary duties: School teachers provide numerous important services and functions, often at the same time. They supervise students, conduct research, create lesson plans, and present in-person and virtual lessons. Teachers also develop homework assignments, review each student’s work and keep track of grades throughout the year. Outside of normal school hours, teachers often meet with parents, attend seminars, advise academic clubs, and oversee extracurricular activities. In addition to this, school teachers provide emotional support for students, connect them with the school counselor if needed and offer additional help to make sure students understand their coursework.

5. Marketing manager

National average salary: $63,817 per year

Primary duties: Marketing managers are responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a wide variety of campaigns. Some of their primary job duties include identifying target audiences, developing marketing strategies, establishing key performance indicators, and analyzing data. Marketing managers often oversee a team of other marketing professionals and collaborate closely with graphic designers, photographers, copywriters, and videographers. They may manage all of the marketing initiatives for one company or work with several clients in different industries. Marketing managers also create advertisements for a wide variety of online, print, radio and television platforms, which makes multitasking an important skill.

6. Construction project manager

National average salary: $82,285 per year

Primary duties: Construction project managers oversee every phase of a project, from the initial design through the final inspection. They’re responsible for supervising other team members, creating work schedules, tracking employee performance, and making sure each project stays within its designed budget. In addition to communicating with their team, construction project managers provide regular updates to clients and project stakeholders. They also obtain the necessary permits for each project and develop project estimates. Other people construction managers work closely with include architects, vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors.

7. Nurse

National average salary: $85,888 per year

Primary duties: Nurses have a wide range of job duties they need to complete to care for patients. They monitor vital signs, operate medical devices, perform diagnostic tests, and record medical histories. Nurses may also dispense medications and provide other treatments as needed. Often, nurses care for multiple patients at the same time, which requires them to have excellent time management, organization and multitasking skills. Nurses also assist doctors when they perform medical procedures and collaborate with other members of the medical team.

8. Chief innovation officer

National average salary: $109,378 per year

Primary duties: Chief innovation officers are responsible for identifying new opportunities to improve business processes and encourage company growth. They often work with several business departments throughout an organization. For example, chief innovation officers might work with the human resources department to improve employee training programs, the research and development (R&D) department to expand product lines, and the marketing department to explore new markets. Some of the tasks they may complete include conducting research, generating reports, giving presentations, establishing benchmarks and meeting with other executive-level colleagues.
