What You Need to Know About Contesting NECO Grades

Contesting a grade in any examination conducted by NECO is a structured process, designed to ensure fairness and transparency. Whether you’re a candidate who has participated in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for internal students, or the SSCE for external candidates, understanding the conditions and procedures for grade contention is crucial.

Eligible Examinations and Time Frame

  • Eligible Examinations:
    • Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
    • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE Internal)
    • Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE External)
  • Time Frame for Contesting Grades: The window for contesting grades spans sixteen (16) months following the release of the results for any given examination. This timeline is essential for maintaining the relevance and timeliness of the contestation process.

Conditions for Contesting Grades

To ensure that your grade contestation is considered, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Eligibility: You must have been registered for and sat the examination (BECE, SSCE Internal, or SSCE External) in question.
  2. Timeliness: Applications for grade contestation must be submitted within the specified sixteen-month period.
  3. Procedure: It’s imperative to follow the approved channels for seeking redress:
    • For BECE or SSCE Internal results, the application must be initiated by the school authority on the school’s letterhead, complete with the school’s stamp and the signature of a school official. The application must include the candidate’s full name, registration number, center name and number, examination type (BECE or SSCE Internal), examination year, subjects, and the nature of the complaint.
    • For SSCE External grades, candidates should apply independently, providing the same details as required for internal examinations.
  4. Supporting Documents: Candidates must attach the following documents to their application:
    • Result Slip
    • Evidence of Payment (Payment slip into NECO’s TSA, receipt of payment issued by a NECO official, generated RRR)
  5. Prescribed Fee: A fee is required per contested paper, as follows:
    • BECE: N15,000
    • SSCE (Internal): N20,000
    • SSCE (External): N20,000

Please note that these fees are subject to change.
