National average salary: $32,472 per year

Primary duties: A security guard protects certain property by patrolling and inspecting it for potential dangers, such as vandalism and terrorism. They also help make sure individuals are safe and monitor visitor access. Job duties include removing trespassers from a property, having guests sign in when arriving and leaving a location, recording suspicious activities and reporting to supervisors regularly.

2. Bouncer

National average salary: $33,429 per year

Primary duties: A bouncer or door person prevents troublemakers from entering an establishment. They often work at nightclubs, bars, concerts, casinos, billiard halls, and other related establishments. Some common job duties include checking identification cards to see if visitors are under the legal drinking age, prohibiting substance-impaired individuals from entering the facility, handling aggressive visitors and providing safety to guests.

3. Bailiff

Primary duties: A bailiff provides security to judges, juries, defendants and plaintiffs in a court setting. They enforce all policies in court and carry out orders from the judge. Job duties also include checking guests for firearms before they enter the courtroom, escorting jurors, providing security services, removing disruptive guests from the courtroom, declaring the judge’s entry into the room and collecting evidence from legal parties.

4. Gatekeeper

National average salary: $36,348 per year

Primary duties: A gatekeeper opens and closes a gate to allow vehicles to enter a residential neighborhood or other secure campuses. They position themselves at an entry point to determine who can go through and prevent trespassers from entering. Other responsibilities include checking visitors into the complex, paging residents when their guests arrive and reviewing member IDs.

5. Concierge security officer

National average salary: $40,438 per year

Primary duties: A concierge or front desk security officer provides security and hospitality services to office and apartment buildings. They ensure that only authorized personnel enter the building. Concierge security officers may also greet visitors, maintain constant surveillance of the area, write incident reports, check bags and respond to phone calls.

6. Loss prevention officer

National average salary: $46,456 per year

Primary duties: A loss prevention officer or store detective prevents theft from occurring in a retail store. They often work undercover to discourage criminal behavior. Job duties may include monitoring live security feeds, questioning customers who act suspiciously, providing eyewitness accounts at police stations, checking customers thought to have unlawful possession of a product and recovering stolen items.

7. Security officer

Primary duties: A security officer oversees the security team of an organization. Unlike security guards, they patrol more than one specific area and rotate to various checkpoints. Job duties include examining the identification of passengers, checking flight tickets, searching suspicious carry-on baggage, performing hand-held wand searches on passengers who trigger the machine alarms, warning other guards of suspicious baggage and recording information about baggage setting off alarms.

2. Correctional officer

National average salary: $32,599 per year

Primary duties: A correctional officer ensures the safety and welfare of prisoners. These security professionals enforce rules and regulations inside a prison. Common job duties include supervising inmate activities, escorting inmates during transport, reporting an inmate’s conduct, searching inmates for contraband items, ensuring inmates remain in custody, conducting accurate headcounts of inmates and inspecting the facility to ensure they meet safety standards.
