Can I Move to Canada If I Work Remotely?

Yes, it is possible for you to move to Canada, if all you do is work remotely. In the next heading, I will be discussing people who are in this category, the necessary things needed for them to be able to move to Canada, and others.

Category of People That Can Move to Canada if They Work Remotely

I know that the intentions of asking this question may differ, hence the need to clarify the people this blog post is for. This is for you, if

  • You are not a Canadian, but you want to move to Canada to work remotely for a company that is not Canadian.
  • You are not a Canadian, but you want to move to Canada and you got a remote job from a Canadian company.

Even though these two cases seem so similar, they are not. I will treat these categories of remote workers separately when it comes to moving to Canada.

What You Need to Know About Moving to Canada as a Remote Worker in a Non-Canadian Company

Working in a Canadian company remotely changes the whole ball game, but working in a non-Canadian company seems easy, as you are not entering the Canadian workforce.

You are just moving to Canada, and then your remote work which is not in Canada is being done during your stay in Canada. And I’m pretty sure that you are looking to stay in Canada for more than six months.

You don’t need a work permit if you are in this category. A digital nomad visa would have been perfect for you, but Canada does not offer the visa at the moment. The visa started after the covid-19 era when remote work started becoming the order of the day.

A tourist visa would have been perfect for you, but it restricts you to a 6-month stay, and the visa does not technically allow you to work.

Here are the visa means by which you can move to Canada if you are in this Category:

1. Self-employed visa

This self-employed visa is sure for people who are self-employed, and it affords you a stay of more than 6 months, which is better than the tourist visa.

The criteria that will be used in selection include experience, age, adaptability, education, language abilities, and education. If you will be coming with your family, you all will have to go through medical and security checks.

2. Canada Express Entry

This is another means you can move to Canada if you are working remotely, especially if you want to move to Canada permanently. You can make use of the Federal Skilled Workers Program and Federal Skill Trade.

Here are the eligibility criteria for Canada Express Entry Federal Skilled Workers Program:

  • skilled work experience
  • language ability
  • education

Here are the eligibility criteria for Canada Entry Federal Skilled Workers Program:

  • Must fulfill the required language proficiency standards for writing, reading, listening, and speaking.
  • Must possess at least two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience in a skilled trade within the five years leading up to your application. Volunteer work or unpaid internships are not considered valid work experience.
  • Must also meet the job requirements outlined in the National Occupational Classification for your skilled trade, with the exception of requiring a certificate of qualification. You must either hold a valid job offer for full-time employment lasting a minimum of one year or possess a certificate of qualification for your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.

What You Need to Know About Moving to Canada as a Remote Worker in a Canadian Company

Working in a Canadian company remotely changes the whole ball game, as you will be needing a work permit to move to Canada as a remote worker.

If the company hired you, you will need a temporary work permit from them to move to Canada as a remote worker.

Why Canada is a Good Country for Remote Workers

Canada is really a great country for you if you work remotely, and here are the reasons:

1. Good transport network

You will be spending most of your time indoors, but I am sure if you decide to go out, you will love to get to your destination as soon as possible. With the Canadian transport system, you won’t have to worry about traffic delays.

2. The atmosphere

The environment and atmosphere in Canada are one that is very cool and inviting. If you are a lover of nature, you will love it in Canada.

3.  The citizens

The people are so welcome, and open, and they do not discriminate mostly. You will be able to meet people of different origins. You definitely will enjoy your stay in Canada
