You will hear about Waec Registration Form, Waec Official Exam Timetable and Waec Results Release up to three times in a Year. In fact, almost everything about Waec happens three times every year.
Study Smarter
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) conducts three different examinations yearly. The WASSCE for Private Candidates-1st Series (Jan./Feb.); WASSCE for School Candidates (April/May) and WASSCE for Private Candidates-2nd Series (Aug./Sept.).
If you’re wondering which of the Waec you should take as a secondary school student then worry no more. Students or School candidates are expected to sit for WASSCE for school candidates. This is the most popular Waec and it starts in April/May.
The WASSCE for private candidates is also referred to as Waec GCE. It used to be called Nov/Dec GCE before WAEC decided to start conducting it twice a year. This gave birth to the first series and second series Waec GCE.
In summary, the three exams conducted by Waec are:
- January Waec (First Series)
- Waec SSCE
- August Waec (Second Series)
Not Everyone is in Secondary School
The first reason Waec conducts 3 exams in a year is that not everyone is in school. Some persons dropped out of school long ago but wish to further their Education or use Waec result for reasons best known to them. It is therefore a good idea to give them that chance.
The April/May Waec SSCE is specially for candidates who are in Secondary schools or failed Waec earlier. In fact, If you are less than 22 years then this type of Waec is for you. Note that you can sit for GCE if you wish.
Making it Easy to Mark Waec Scripts
The second reason Waec conducts 3 exams three different periods in a year is for ease of marking. Waec releases results around 45 days after the examination. This won’t be possible if all examinations are taking the same time (limited manpower for supervision and logistics).
There are candidates who are using Waec awaiting results to gain admission into various Universities and Polytechnics. It is therefore good to give them special time for examination and admission clearance.
Different Options For Private Candidates
The third reason Waec conducts 3 exams yearly is to give Candidates options. For example, the first and second series are for people who are not in school. This suggests that many of them are workers and don’t have all the time. Those who are not less busy or missed the January exam can take the second series in August.
Waec conducts three exams yearly and you can gain admission with anyone you wish to sit for. It is all about choice. That’s all for today. Let me know how you feel about this.
