MCB 210 INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY (3 CREDITS)-1ST

Introduction to fundamental principle and methods in microbiology. Structure systematic, growth and function . preliminary study of viruses. Role of microbes in infection, food and industry, and in the environment. (Two lectures and one practical/week).

MCB 211: GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY 1(3 CREDIT) 1ST SEMESTER

Nature of microbiology and types of microorganism. History of microbiology –tools and techniques used in microbiology.  Structure and comparison of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Morphology, life cycles and economic important of bacteria, fungi , protozoa, algae  and viruses. Principle of Microbial taxonomy with particular reference to bacteria.

Nutrition metabolism and growth of microorganisms in clouding effects of environmental factors on growth . Survival inhibition and death of microorganism. (two lecture and 1 practical /week ).

MCB 220 GENERIAL MICROLOGY 11(3CREDIT -2ND SEMESTER

Transfer and change of genetic information in bacterial mutations transduction , transformation , conjugation , plasmid Ecology of microbes microbiology of soil , water diseases /the normal flora of the human body, element of immunology . some common infection disease . (Twoleatures and on practical/week )

MCB 311: BACTERIOLOGY (4CREDIT) 1ST SEMESTER

Microscopy. Dyes  and staining Techniques . Culture media and their preparation . sterilization and pure culture techniques enumeration of preservation of in food and the environment . Maintenance and preservation of culture . spectrophotometry. Chromatography. Identification of bacteria and fungi . Microbiological essay of vitamins. Scientific writing .(one lecture plus tow practical /week).

MCB 312: TOXICOLOGY

Mechanisms of drug toxticity Mangamentof acute druge poisoning plant , bacterial and animal poisons ;solvent poisoning; pesticides Herbicides; Radiation toxicology; Air-borne poisoning ; metals and chelating agent; Food additives.

MCB 320: VIROLOGY (3CREDIT) -2ND SEMESTER

The discovery of filterable viruses (historical background) the viruses particle its structure and general properties ,the isolation ,purification and classification schemes of viruses animals viruses and their replication mechanisms. Plant viruses and associated problems in agriculture.Tumour viruses Viruses and genetic engineering.

MCB321:MICROBIAL PHYSIOLOGY AND Microbiology (3 CREDIT )2ND SEMESTER

Microbial growth; change in cell population and macromolecular composition drudge the growth process. Growth under nutrient-limiting condition. Microbial. Microbial carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism. Metabolic enzymes, sources of reducing power, energy yields bio-synthetic intermediates and products. Structure and function of cell membranes. Transport system in the microbial cell regularity mechanisms.

MCB 410 MICROBIAL GENETICS (3CREDIT) 1ST SEMESTER

Principles of genetic analysis mechanism and nature of mutation and recombination; transformation conjugation and transduction plasmid, chromosomal replication and models of genetic transfer: chemical coding and expression of genetic information. Recombination in bacteria viruses and eukaryotic protist  Genetic Engineering.

MCB 411 FOOOD MICROBIOLGY (4 CREDITS) 1ST SEMESTER

Food and microorganism. Classification and identification of microorganism important in food. Principles of food preservation ; use of high temperatures, low temperatures radiation, pressure food additive and drying , contamination preservation and spoilage of different types of foods, foods in relation to disease, foods  borne infections and intoxications microbiology of dairy industry.

MCB 412 ENVIROMENTAL MICROBIOLGY (4 CREDITS) 1ST SEMESTER

The microbial environment.  Concepts in environmental microbiology. Microbial populations and community dynamics microorganism in their natural environment ,the  terrestrial environment the nature, chemical activities and methods of investigation of soil micro flora nitrogen fixation.  The aquatic environment –the microbiology of water supplies, water treatment water supply and public health sewage and sewage disposal in hot climates. The role of microbes in prospecting recovery and degradation of petroleum products.

MCB 413: SEMINAR (2 CREDITS) 1ST SEMESTER

Seminar on selected topics in microbiology.

MCB 414: RESARCH PROJECT (6 CREDITS) 1ST SEMESTER

An investigation carried out under supervision on a microbiology problem.

MCB 415: IMMUNOLOGY (4 CREDITS) 2ND SEMESTER

Fundamental concept of immunity humoral and cellular product of immunity structure synthesis and functions of antibodies, cell of the immune system. The complement system advantages and disadvantage of immunity hypersensitivity and immunology phenomena immunologic tolerance .Autoimmunity transplanting immunity, immunology of reproduction and immunology.

MCB 420: PATHOGENIC MICROBIOLOGY I (4 CREDITS) 2ND SEMESTER

Principles of infection immunology and serology .Aetiology epidemiology, pathogenic mechanism, clinical symptoms. Laboratory diagnosis prophylactic and therapeutic procedure, control and prevention of selected infection viral bacterial protozoa and fungal disease of man and animals especially those prevalent in Africa.

MCB 421:   INDUSTRAIL MICROBIOLOGY (5 CREDITS) 2ND SEMESTER

Nature of industrial microbiology and some microorganism important in the manufacture of industrial products some general principles of industrial fermentations.

Exploitation of microorganism by man in industrial and food affairs brewing production of wine burukutu, pito and oyokpo production, use of microbes as food for human (single cell protein) and steroid transformations antibiotics fermentations.

Vitamin and amino acid production microbial enzymes of industrial importance .microbial deterioration of pulpwood paper and paint petroleum microbiology (to include the use of microbes in prospecting for oil in the industrial waste by cultivation of yeast waste disposal systems immobilized enzymes. Current development in fermentation traditional fermentations. (Three lectures and 2 practical/week)

MCB 422: PATHOGENIC MICROBIOLOGY II (3 CREDITS) 2ND SEMESTER

Fungi bacteria virus and nematode as pathogens of crop plants mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis diseases resistance to include a consideration of genetic of pathogenesis selected from crop diseases assessment of disease severity and estimation of losses epidemiology disease control measures include biological control of pest pathogens.
