It is absolutely true that Jamb has reduced the number of questions to be answered in the UTME. However, Jamb still scores each subject over 100%. Jamb Sets 60 English Questions and 40 Questions from other subjects.

You are simply answering 180 Questions in Jamb. These questions are marked by the computer according to the marks Jamb assigns to each subject.

The total score you can get in a subject is 100. The highest you can score in Jamb is 400. And the minimum you can score is above zero.

For example, if you are required to answer 40 questions in Mathematics and you were good enough to score 20 over 40 correctly, Your score will be divided by 40 multiplied by hundred percent (20/40×100 = 50). Then you have a Jamb scored of 50 in Mathematics.

Let’s See something below:

  • Total Score Obtainable for Mathematics = 40 Marks
  • Assuming your score in the subject = 30 Marks
  • Provided each question carries equal mark
  • Total percentage =100%

Your Jamb Score will be = (30/40)x100 = 75. Do you understand?

Now you may be asking, what if I score 40 over 40? The grading remains the same. Jamb will divide your 40 by 40 and multiply by 100. This will leave you with a score of 100%.

Does it apply to all Subjects? This calculation does not apply to Jamb use of English.  Jamb English questions do no carry equal marks. Jamb comprehension passages usually carry more marks (Usually 3 marks each) than other questions.

In a case where Questions carry different marks, the total marks you scored will be divided by the total possible mark and multiplied by 100. This is to ensure that you don’t score above 100 in a subject. The Jamb Computer is programmed to do all that.

If there are five questions with 3 marks attached after each comprehension passages and Jamb decides to set two passages; then you will score 30 marks by answering only comprehension passages correctly. Other questions will then sum to 70 marks to complete 100 total marks.

How?

  • One passage is five questions
  • Two passages equal to 10 questions.
  • One question carries 3 marks.
  • 10 times 3 equals 30.

After the whole calculation, your mark will be divided by the total mark obtainable and multiplied by 100. This will give you your Jamb Score.
