In my few years of blogging, I have experimented with a lot of ads placement and Google AdSense ads units. From Matched content to Display, Text ads, in-article, In-feed and Links Ads Units.
Content and Target country affect your Google AdSense Earnings and Cost Per Click (CPC). However, CPC is generally lower for links ad and having many links ads will reduce your overall blog CPC and not necessarily earnings.
Google Adsense has a lower cost per click (CPC) which means you earn more for the same number of clicks if you are using a Display or banner Adsense Units. But Link Adverts attract more clicks which increases your click-through rate (CTR). You will definitely get more clicks with Google Adsense Link Ads.
If you ask me whether links ads increases earnings, I will gladly say yes. How? If your CPC for a Display advert is $0.08 and CPC for a link ad is $0.03. If your Display ad gets 50 clicks a day while the links advert gets 210 clicks a day. You will end up earning $4 from the display ads and $6.3 from links ads daily.
There is a high chance that your Link adverts will get up to three times more clicks than your Text, Display, In-article and other Google AdSense adverts. Please don’t place too many adverts on your blog; it is a very bad user experience.

So far in my blogging career, I have made more money from link ads than I make from Text and Display ads. CPC is not the only yardstick for measuring earnings. It is true that general CPC drops as links adverts get more clicks but Clicks (CTR) and Revenue per one thousand page views (RPM) matters a lot and increases too.
With these few points of mine, I hope you are now convinced that links ads are not bad? They are additinal source of earnings from Google Adsense and you should use it on your blog.
