AEB111** Introduction to Animal & Environmental Biology (4 credits, First Semester) Man population growth, Environmental Pollution and impact on the biosphere;

Faunal biodiversity: Invertebrata (Protozoa, Prorifera, Coelenterata, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Mollusca, Annelida, Arthropoda, Echinodermata.

Vertebrata (Cephalochordata, Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, Mammalia. Mammalian Anatomy: Anatomy of Rattus rattus

AEB122** Functional Zoology (4 credits, second semester) Embryology: Gametogenesis, fertilization and cleavage as demonstrated by Amphioxus, Genetics:

the cell and distribution of genetic material mitosis, meiosis, inheritance, sex determination and sex-linked inheritance, Histology: Cells, tissues, organ formation and main features.

Physiology: Functioning of mammalian skin, muscles/skeleton, alimentary system/nutritional requirements and deficiencies.

AEB211** Pre-requisite Environmental Ecology (4 credits, first semester) AEB 111 Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of Nigeria:

Physical and chemical properties, faunal adaptations for life; inter-relationships (food chains/webs). Conservation of faunal resources of Nigeria.

AEB213** Pre-requisite Invertebrates Zoology (4 credits First Semester) AEB 111 Identification, phylogency,

biology and economic importance of Protozoa, Porifera, Platyhelminthes, Aschelminuthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda and Echinodermata of Nigeria.

AEB222** Pre-requisite Histology (4 credits, Second semester) AEB 122 Structure of vertebrate skin, skeletal, muscular,

alimentary respiratory circulatory excretory, nervous endocrine and reproductive systems.

AEB224** Pre-requisite Vertebrate Zoology (4 credits, Second Semester) AEB 111 Identification, phylogeny,

biology and economic importance of: Cephalochordata, Hemichordata, Urochordata, Agnatha, Pisces, Amphibia,

Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia of Nigeria. Students are expected to dissect the dogfish.

neuromuscular and endocrine systems; nutrition and digestion, blood and circulation, excretion, respiration, osmoregulation.

Animal and Environmental Biology Techniques (3 Credits, First Semester) AEB 222 Methods of collections,

preservation and classification of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and vertebrates, taxidermy. Sampling techniques for terrestrial and aquatic parameters/organisms.

Instrumentation: Microscopy, Chromatography, Manometry, spectrophotometry, Microtomes,

Staining and preparation of permanent slides, presentation and interpretation of biological data.

AEB314* Pre-requisites Syllabus Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (3 Credits, First Semester) AEB 111, 224 Functional comparative Anatomy of the organ systems in vertebrates;

Skin circulatory, digestive, excretory, nervous, respiratory, skeletal and urino-genital systems of Pisces.

Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia, Students are expected to dissect fish, toad, lizard, chick and rat.

AEB315** Pre-requisites Syllabus Introductory Hydrobiology (4 Credits, First Semester) AEB 211 The aquatic environment:

Types of freshwater, brackish water and marine. General physical and chemical properties: Temperature, Currents,

Waves, Tides, pH, DO and Salinity of surface waters using Nigerian examples. Adaptations to aquatic life as shown by planktonic organisms and benthos. Life in the inter-tidal zone.

AEB316 ** Pre-requisites Syllabus Introductory Parasitology (4 Credits, First Semester) AEB 222, 213 Parasitism: Facultative and obligate parasitism;

nature of different body habitats, (Host parasite relationships) Classification, morphology and life cycles of important examples of protozoans,

Platyhelminthes and Nematodes. Resistance and immunity to protozoans and helminth parasites.

AEB317** Pre-requisites Syllabus Introductory Entomology (3 Credits, Second Semester) AEB 211, 213 Evolution, identification, Systematics,

morphology biology, life cycles and distributions of insects, mites and ticks, behaviour and ecology of social insects.

Physiology of migration, hibernation, aestivation and diapause. Effects of high attitude and hydrostatic pressure on organisms and adaptations to these factors, Reproductive adaptations.

total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, conductivity) and chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, nutrients, cations, anions, total hydrocarbons, oil and grease,

heavy metals) properties and seasonality of Nigeria water bodies. Variations in water quality parameters according to water types:

freshwater, brackish and marine. Ecological studies of Zooplankton, Benthos and Nekton – Productivity, diversity, Biodindicator status and Applications in water pollution studies.

AEB417** Pre-requisites Syllabus Entomology (4 Credits, First Semester) AEB 211, 213, 224, 327 Taxonomy, epidemiology and physiological effects on hosts of the major insect pests and Acari of agricultural,

medical and veterinary importance in Nigeria; management and integrated control of crop pests, livestock and stored products. Collection, culturing,

study of life stages and permanent preservation of various insect groups’ competition, population dynamics, swarming and pest outbreaks among insects and the Acari.

AEB418** Pre-requisites Syllabus Community and Ecosystem Ecology (3 Credits, First Semester) AEB 2328 Community structure:

species diversity and tropic structure. Community metabolism: primary and secondary production their measurement and limiting factors in natural ecosystems.

Energy budgets and ecological efficiencies; Nutrient cycles. Community changes: Wildlife resources of Nigeria.
