PHYS309 Energy and Environment (2 credit units)
Understanding of environment. Concept of Energy and power. Principles demands and outlook. Transformation of energy and its costs. Energy from fossil fuels, hydro costs, capacity, storage, reserves, efficiency and environmental effects.

Nuclear reactors, fission and fusion. Alternate sources of energy. Sole, geothermal, tidal, wind energy etc. Promises and problems.  Need for energy (national and global) policy and management.

PHYS311   Quantum Physics ( 2 credit units)
Evidence for the failure of classical Physics, The Schrodinger liquation, Solutions of the Schrodinger equation, Schrodinger’s equation in spherical coordinates, approximate solution of the Schrödinger Equation.

PHYS321 Vibrations and Waves (2 credit units)
Review of 1-dimensional oscillator, Forced Oscillation, Coupled oscillations, Traveling waves, Waves in two and three dimensions. Polarization, Interference and Diffraction.

PHYS323   Electronics (3 credit units)
Principles of semiconductor, p-n junction, Network theory, Common Emitter Amplifier, Principles of feedback, amplifier circuits, Operational Amplifiers.

PHYS333 Heat and Momentum Transfer (2 credit units)
Fluid flow; Linear and Turbulent flow in forced and free convection. Fully developed flows and boundary laser development. Heat transfer, Conduction, Condensation, Boiling, Heat exchanger design, Herat transfer in nuclear reactors. Radiative heat transfer.

PHYS 343 Solid State Physics I    (2 credit units)
Crystal Structure, Geometry of crystalline state, Miller indices. Scattering of x-rays, Bragg’s law.   Experimental collection of diffraction data.   Crystal binding – Elastic properties.   Lattice vibrations   and thermal properties

PHYS331 Thermodynamics ( 2 credit units)
Thermodynamic systems, first law of Thermodynamics, Second law of Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, and Third law of Thermodynamics.

PHYS381  Introductory Geophysics  (2 credit units)
Geophysics as a discipline, Generation and propagation of elastic waves, seismic, gravity, magnetic and electrical methods, methods of examining earth structure, Seismic studies mechanism of earthquakes, Heat flow, concept of plate tectonics and continental drift.

PHYS361 Advanced Physics Laboratory (2   credit units)
Advanced experiments in optics, electricity, magnetism, atomic, nuclear and solid state physics. Statistics and data handling, experiments in electronics, rectifier, transistor and amplifier are studied. Simple circuit analysis and design of standard electronic circuits are emphasized.
